In 1992, a small, alternative cultural association called “Ummi Gummi” started the first attempts to show something like street theater in Lienz, in the first five years still linked to the Lienz city festival and with just six groups. In 1997, the first independent, two-day street theater festival took place, which, after steadily growing acceptance, has been called Olala since 2002 and lasts for five days. Today, Ummi Gummi is a cultural institution and Olala is one of the largest street theater festivals south of the main Alpine ridge. Over the last three decades, Olala has developed into one of the most popular and well-known festivals of its kind in Europe for its innovative and unconventional character. The festival and its artists (around 40 groups from 15 different countries) transform the urban living space into a large open-air cultural arena, enchant passers-by into curious observers and turn everyday life into a sensual cultural experience. Always on the lookout for something new, the festival combines elements from art, theater and circus and presents new, contemporary forms of performative productions. The significance for locals and guests is enormous in many ways, the nourishment for the mind and soul creates long-lasting anticipation and long-lasting effects. Olala not only changes the city, but also the people - and for longer than the festival week in July. Olala turns the city on its head and surprises with productions that you would otherwise expect in big cities rather than in a small town in the Tyrolean mountains. During the festival week, Lienz is dressed in a colorful dress. Since its beginnings, Olala has impressed with high artistic quality and with sophisticated, entertaining, but also thoughtful and challenging performances that appeal to all generations. The festival consciously distances itself from cheap slapstick and the kind of juggling that can be found in many pedestrian zones in other cities. Olala is a real crowd puller. Around 40,000 festival guests from neighboring regions, from all over Austria and many parts of Europe attend the annual spectacle, which is also reflected in the media.
